Entry Dated July 24, 2008 - Reality versus Hollywood; Foxhound versus Firefox.

Does anyone remember Firefox (the movie)? The one with Clint Eastwood as "Gant", an alcoholic, anti-social pilot who has been tasked to infiltrate the big Red Russian machine (prior to Glasnost), and steal their latest and greatest bit of military hardware (back then thought control was pretty big and scary), the thought-controlled weapons operated MiG 31 Firefox. That was the whole plot of the movie.

Now what's the whole point of this post. Well...evidently Comet Collectibles has released a whole new 1/48 & 1/72 scale model of the Firefox. Replete with the weapons and all that good stuff that goes bang. Now you can create the "Hollywood Vision of the MiG 31" and "Reality" diorama. Studio 2 has built the 1/48 scale version, and Planet X has built the 1/72 version.

Because, I hate to say it, but the real MiG 31 Foxhound severely does NOT look like the MiG 31 of Hollywood invention. But weren't those humongous Tumansky engines GREAT??!! And the huge intakes. Now that's what I call your "comrade-inhalers". ~"Hey, Boris, where's Yuri, he was standing here a minute ago."~

Hollywood's interpretation of the MiG 31:
MiG 31 Firefox

Reality's interpretation of the MiG 31:
MiG31Foxhound

Really puts a sour taste in terms of technological advancement doesn't it. We really ain't as far along as we thought we were.

But rest assured, if you're a model-builder, this Hollywood's Firefox will be nice to put up on your model-shelf alongside your MiG 31 Foxhound; at least in 1:72. For the real Foxhound, we 1:48 scale modelers will have to wait quite a bit longer. Time to hound Trumpeter. Damn it!!!

OK, for you modelers out there, if you wanna buy up Comet's offerings, you can go there online at Comet Miniatures website: http://www.comet-miniatures.com/ and look for Firefox. And keep yer grubby mitts off the 1/48; At least until I get mine!!! ~evil grin~
